Tomas Young: The Dying War Veteran’s Last Letter to Mr. George W. Bush and Mr. Dick Cheney

georgeCHENEYbushsdhdhdhdhdhdhd

Chris Hedges wrote a great article about Tomas Young, a paralyzed war veteran that is currently on his death bed. Hedges flew to Kansas City, MO, to interview Young who was paralyzed in Iraq in 2004. Unfortunately, this brave man is on hospice in his home, and isn’t expected to live much longer. Before Young passed away, he took the time to tell his story in a direct letter to former President, George W. Bush and former Vice President, Dick Cheney:

To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
From: Tomas Young

I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.

I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.

I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.

Your positions of authority, your millions of dollars of personal wealth, your public relations consultants, your privilege and your power cannot mask the hollowness of your character. You sent us to fight and die in Iraq after you, Mr. Cheney, dodged the draft in Vietnam, and you, Mr. Bush, went AWOL from your National Guard unit. Your cowardice and selfishness were established decades ago. You were not willing to risk yourselves for our nation but you sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage.

I joined the Army two days after the 9/11 attacks. I joined the Army because our country had been attacked. I wanted to strike back at those who had killed some 3,000 of my fellow citizens. I did not join the Army to go to Iraq, a country that had no part in the September 2001 attacks and did not pose a threat to its neighbors, much less to the United States. I did not join the Army to “liberate” Iraqis or to shut down mythical weapons-of-mass-destruction facilities or to implant what you cynically called “democracy” in Baghdad and the Middle East. I did not join the Army to rebuild Iraq, which at the time you told us could be paid for by Iraq’s oil revenues. Instead, this war has cost the United States over $3 trillion. I especially did not join the Army to carry out pre-emptive war. Pre-emptive war is illegal under international law. And as a soldier in Iraq I was, I now know, abetting your idiocy and your crimes. The Iraq War is the largest strategic blunder in U.S. history. It obliterated the balance of power in the Middle East. It installed a corrupt and brutal pro-Iranian government in Baghdad, one cemented in power through the use of torture, death squads and terror. And it has left Iran as the dominant force in the region. On every level—moral, strategic, military and economic—Iraq was a failure. And it was you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, who started this war. It is you who should pay the consequences.

I would not be writing this letter if I had been wounded fighting in Afghanistan against those forces that carried out the attacks of 9/11. Had I been wounded there I would still be miserable because of my physical deterioration and imminent death, but I would at least have the comfort of knowing that my injuries were a consequence of my own decision to defend the country I love. I would not have to lie in my bed, my body filled with painkillers, my life ebbing away, and deal with the fact that hundreds of thousands of human beings, including children, including myself, were sacrificed by you for little more than the greed of oil companies, for your alliance with the oil sheiks in Saudi Arabia, and your insane visions of empire.

I have, like many other disabled veterans, suffered from the inadequate and often inept care provided by the Veterans Administration. I have, like many other disabled veterans, come to realize that our mental and physical wounds are of no interest to you, perhaps of no interest to any politician. We were used. We were betrayed. And we have been abandoned. You, Mr. Bush, make much pretense of being a Christian. But isn’t lying a sin? Isn’t murder a sin? Aren’t theft and selfish ambition sins? I am not a Christian. But I believe in the Christian ideal. I believe that what you do to the least of your brothers you finally do to yourself, to your own soul.

My day of reckoning is upon me. Yours will come. I hope you will be put on trial. But mostly I hope, for your sakes, that you find the moral courage to face what you have done to me and to many, many others who deserved to live. I hope that before your time on earth ends, as mine is now ending, you will find the strength of character to stand before the American public and the world, and in particular the Iraqi people, and beg for forgiveness

Big Fish: An Office Tale

220px-Big_Fish_movie

While I’ve contemplated whether I should write this article or not, I have ultimately decided it was necessary. And not because it’s something you need to hear, but because it’s something I NEED to get off my chest. There are often those people you encounter and wonder to yourself ‘why the fuck do I have to sit here and listen to the bullshit coming out of this guy’s mouth?’ Well, unfortunately, I am often forced to listen to exaggerated stories that ultimately change with each interception in the conversation, thanks to someone I’d rather not name.

The thing is, I almost always feel bad for people and attempt to understand where they’re coming from and why people are so rude or ignore them. And that’s exactly what I did to get myself into this situation… along with working alongside him at the same company, which trust me, was not a decision I made.

This man is also one who knows everything, which I find quite odd considering how much I know, which is everything. Okay, fine, so I don’t know everything, but I’d like to feel that I’ve definitely researched some stuff and had one up on him, but apparently my facts are inaccurate. Well, not just my facts, but those coming from CNN, BBC, and other sources of unreliable media. I can’t believe how incredibly stupid I have been and was unaware of until this man happened to point out my lacking devotion to the truth.

And to be quite honest, this wouldn’t be quite as aggravating if he didn’t refuse to stop talking. I really feel he keeps dialogue streaming from his mouth to sound cool or somehow show that he has some valuable information or wealth of knowledge coming….up….next. But, no. Just noise that goes on and on and on and keeps me from working and instead, concentrating on how much I wish he were an Avox (reference to ‘The Hunger Games’: Avoxes have their tongues removed). Well, he’s telling me a story now, so let me step back into reality and try to make sense of the amazing story about something miraculous that happened to him in life that ironically brought him to know something better than me, when I stated that our economy wasn’t looking so good.

[VIDEO] Kinect Grocery Cart: Shopping Made Easy

Whether you know this or not, I am a huge fan of technology. Some people may fear that technology makes us lazy, less socially available, as well as a variety of other issues. While I do agree that some technology has made it easier for us to be lazy and or avoid human interaction, I think it’s up to us to not just accept that and find ways to interact socially as well as not submit to laziness.

Another reason I like the technological advances that are being made is because it broadens our horizons and advances us as a race. If technology is the basis for most everything, then most everybody is going to have to have at least some understanding of how these devices and programs work. Someone who may not have cared before, may have to now and will have to use parts of the brain they didn’t care to use prior. Also, as the population continues to grow, making simple tasks more convenient is going to be helpful when in crowded places that would normally have lines. When you’re in a small town, lines are something that move quickly, but in a place like Los Angeles, New York, and Japan… lines are horrendous. For this reason, I think this way of shopping is genius:

(And just because things don’t work 100% of the time doesn’t mean they’ve failed, it means that they need improvements… as do most things)

The Truth Behind This Photo

raoni

Over 40,000 people have shared this photo on different social media outlets and in turn, made this a viral image with a remarkable story. Chief Raoni of the Kayapó people, it claims, is crying because he’s helpless “before the advance of capitalist progress, modern predatory civilization,” according to the caption on the FaceBook posting.

The Belo Monte dam, on a tributary of the Amazon river, has only been under construction since last year, though it’s been proposed since the late 1970s. It will displace between than 20,000 and 40,000 people, according to various sources.

Along with the image is a link to petition the construction of the dam. Luckily, due to this image, they have nearly reached their goal of 750,000 signatures. Unfortunately, many people signed that petition as a reaction to this image, even thought he story itself has been fabricated.

Although Chief Raoini does protest the construction of the dam, he told AmazonWatch.org that this photo is actually a moment in which he was reunited with a family member.

All in all, it’s great that this photo raised awareness, but unfortunate that someone falsified information to do so.

[VIDEO] When Zebras Attack

article-2088206-0F824DD900000578-710_468x328

Megan was minding her own business and eating some chips with her window open during a wild safari park tour (brilliant) when she was suddenly attacked by a zebra. Here’s an idea, if you’re going to be eating delicious chips in front of wild animals while roaming their land, ou might want to keep the window up and pay attention to what’s going on around you, hence, why you are there to begin with.

And don’t be such a baby. This is a weak ass bruise and it appears the zebra did little damage. Stop crying and continue on with your tour.

[VIDEO] Housemate On Brazilian ‘Big Brother’ Raped On Live TV

article-2087801-0F80240B00000578-482_634x286

Dailymail:

A housemate on Brazil’s version of Big Brother has been raped live on TV, it has been alleged.

Police today confirmed they had begun an investigation and carried out a search of the studios in Rio de Janeiro, where the popular reality show is being filmed.

Viewers were shocked in the early hours of Sunday to watch contestant Daniel Echaniz 31, apparently force himself on 23-year-old student Monique Amin, who had passed out drunk after a boozy party.

Amin was asked about the incident the next day in the diary room, which led to the investigation. The female didn’t know much about the incident so the tape was reviewed where she can be seen barely moving, seemingly unconscious.

As the scandal began to engulf the show, one of Brazil’s most watched TV programmes, police officers arrived at the house and interviewed Ms Amin for three hours, before taking her away for a rape examination, according to sources.

Police are believed to have then told TV channel Globo to either stop broadcasting the show, which is produced by Endemol and only began last Tuesday, or eliminate Echaniz.

This seems so impossible seeing as the guy knew he was on television, but I guess there are people out there that idiotic. Poor girl, who is apparently still on the show and participating…

[VIDEO] Gay Rights: How Far Have We Come, How Far Will We Go?

Screen shot 2012-01-17 at 9.58.25 AM

Being gay is something that is difficult to come to terms with, especially for young children who are easily influenced by the people around them. As I was growing up, I remember thinking to myself in bed that I was a lesbian and trying to convince myself to let those words escape me: I am gay. The first time I was able to say that out loud, I cried and remembered thinking to myself ‘Okay, this is going to be okay…I’ll just deal with it in college.’ This become harder everyday by the way because I was a high school girl who wanted to go out and date and have fun.

(Sidenote: This is why many gay people are such big partiers so much later in life, in my opinion. All os us who were unable to have a normal high school experience, come out, discover many gay friends and act like we’re back in high school all over again but this time with friends, parties, and good times when we don’t have to pretend we’re something we’re not.)

The high school I went to was the high school my father and his brothers attended. The town I came from was small and everyone knew most everyone that resided there. I couldn’t possibly imagine telling the people I considered my friends that I was a lesbian; I had heard the things that they said that convinced me of how they would react. The term ‘gay’ has often been used to imply ‘stupid’ or ‘uncool’ and I even used that terminology. Many people who say this do not have a disdain for homosexuals, but it is formatted into our generations vocabulary, and that alone, intimidates gay youth to express themselves freely without the fear of being judged.

Another influence in my life was a guy at my school who dressed like a girl, or rather, more feminine from time to time. I, too, made jokes about this man and to this day am ashamed that I wanted so badly to fit in and hide beneath the persona that I created for myself, that I belittled someone for being different.

Gay youth all over the country are dealing with this everyday. Those that are unable to hide behind anything because of who they are naturally have it ten times harder. But this shouldn’t be the case. No one should have to hide who they are in the hopes of straying people away from bullying them. Friends are a huge part of growing up and developing character, and when we’re unable to be honest with them, we feel more alone than ever.

Yes, gay rights in this country have come tremendously far and I am so happy to be living in this day and age and witnessing such compassion, kindness and understanding. Unfortunately though, there are still many people who are suffering and feel they are trapped in either situation, and rightfully so. Bullying needs to come to an end and feminism in males and masculinity in females needs to stop being condemned. These kids are learning too young that who they are is wrong. The problem with that is they are perfectly fine, in fact, great and courageous people that deserve to live a life of happiness and experience. Don’t take that away from anyone; It’s not yours to take.

The Butt Slasher Has Been Caught!

120114114112-johnny-d-guillen-butt-slashings-story-body

Johnny D. Guillen was the suspected Butt Slasher that terrorized shopping women in Fairfax, Virginia. Apparently he’s been found far from home: Peru. Guillen was the man whom authorities believed slashed the butts of 13 young women as they shopped at various retail stores in the area.

I find this case absolutely hilarious because no one was seriously injured, and the crime itself is somewhat funny. Okay, I know that slashing a woman’s buttocks with a knife isn’t appropriate behavior, but could you imagine how funny that would be years down the line to explain to people that you are the victim of a notorious but non-violent butt slasher? Amazing.

And that he tried to avoid capture is just the icing on this story. This man was so scared of being caught that he fled to Peru! And sadly, he was aware that despite the lack of severity of his crime, police would still want to close the books on this one and assure the county that their citizens were safe from this butt cutter.

Who wants to bet this guy gets more time that sex offenders, such as child molesters, rapists, etc.? I do! I do!
