William Ayres, 79, is a well-known child psychiatrist who is most likely known due to the fact that he was arrested and charged with molesting patients during their physical exams.
Unfortunately, he was supposed to enter the mental hospital on Thursday, but that may not happen. While it should happen eventually, it won’t happen as early as the victims were hoping.
Last week, prosecutor Melissa McKowen told the San Mateo County Times that the delay was due to missing paperwork. But on Monday, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said the real reason for the delay is hospital overcrowding. “They didn’t have a bed space up there,” Wagstaffe said.
A bed for Ayres won’t be available until Oct. 26, he said. Such delays are common at overcrowded Napa State Hospital, he added.
So knowing that he will not be waiting for a trial in the hospital, we should assume that he’s going to have to wait in jail, correct? No. He is out free on $750,000 bail.
The judge in the case has denied requests by prosecutors to remand Ayres into custody until the hospital is ready for him, Wagstaffe said.
Last month, when he was first ordered to receive care at Napa State Hospital, Ayres was given 30 days before he had to surrender to the facility.
Ayres’ prolonged freedom has frustrated families seeking justice against the one-time president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The charges were brought to light four years ago, when Ayres was charged with nine counts of performing lewd acts on seven different boys during their counseling sessions between 1991 and 1996. And although the statute of limitations won’t allow it, he has also been accused of molesting more than 30 other victims.
In 2009, his trial ended with a hung jury, with jurors voting 11-1 in favor of conviction on one charge.
This is sick! Our budgets are being cut on schooling and reconstruction of our cities and states, while prisons and jails are being increased due to overcrowding. In the midst of all that, the hospitals are now left overcrowded and no one wants to increase taxes to put people in a safe place away from our children. This is just one example of a sick piece of shit that is going to be our free because we have people in prison for minimal crimes (specifically, marijuana) taking up space, and therefore has assholes like this claiming dementia going to mental hospitals. The hospitals full, go to jail. Oh no, those are full too. Build more? Sure, why not! Close schools? Yep, then we’ll have more prisoners to fill the newly constructed prisons!
This is pathetic. For all I care, kill the sick piece of crap that is nearly 80 and molested a huge number of children while taking advantage of his title to do so. There, problem solved. we don’t need a hospital, a jail, or a prison, we just need a gun, which plenty of Americans have and would love to do, I’m sure.

I feel so awful that at first I believed Dr. Ayres.. He is smart.
The first day we saw him he told me my son was awful, obstinate and refused his personal physical examination. My son called him a perv. My son was in trouble in other ways so you tend to want to believe this sick son of a bitch. My son has never recovered from this and it has been a horrible time and now looking back I feel so awful for allt the victims. My son was maybe spared due to the fact we had Drs in the family but of course they believed him over the kids…
Not only that but he bilked me in the billing and did so much damage that my son will never recover and his parent I feel so responsible. He ruined our family and hope he rots in a jail cell somewhere but now that wont happen.
